Despite the first film’s less-than-stellar reception, Morbius star Jared Leto has indicated he would remain open to playing Marvel’s living vampire again.
Morbius failed to impress audiences and has been much ridiculed across social media ever since its release. However, while it might not be anyone’s favorite film of the year, it can certainly lay claim to the title of most-memed film of the year. Morbius memes, often ironically revering the film, became so popular that Sony ended up putting the film back in theaters for an extra weekend, though admittedly without much success.
The bizarre story of Morbius and its online legacy all begs one question – could the living vampire ever return to the big screen?
During an interview with The Playlist, Jared Leto was asked whether he would ever consider returning to the role of Morbius in future. While Leto didn’t go into any great detail on the possibility, he suggested he would remain open to the possibility, saying “Well, as the old thing goes, never say never.”
It looks unlikely a Morbius 2 will ever come to fruition after the first film’s poor reception – it is currently sitting at 16% on Rotten Tomatoes – but it is possible Sony may want to feature the character in some of their other Spider-Man-adjacent movies, such as Tom Hardy’s Venom series. Rumors fuelled by Morbius‘s notoriously awkward post-credits scenes have suggested that Sony is gearing up for yet another attempt at a Sinister Six movie. If such a project materializes, maybe Jared Leto’s Dr. Michael Morbius will find himself amongst the ranks of the team of supervillains.
Here is the synopsis for the film:
One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar® winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed and transforms this healer into a hunter.
Directed by Daniel Espinosa from a script written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, Morbius stars Jared Leto, Adria Arjona, Matt Smith, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach produced the project with Lucas Foster, with Palak Patel overseeing it for Sony.
Morbius is available on Digital, and will hit DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD on June 14. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news regarding Jared Leto’s Living Vampire, and be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
